Why I Love Severus Snape

Why I Love Severus Snape
by Jackie from Insane Hussein

He's delightfully awesome. A great man who lusted after Harry's mother, Lily, his one and only real friend during his time at Hogwarts, he spends the rest of his life with his unrequited love and guiding and shaping Harry to be the wizard he was meant to be.

Severus Snape is a half-blood, having revealed that little tidbit in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. He plays along with Dumbledore's scheme to trick Voldemort in to thinking that Dumbledore has died at his command and that he will ultimately triumph over good.

Sallow-skinned, grungy-clothed Snape doesn't know how to deal with Harry when he first comes to Hogwarts, as a boy who has recently discovered the truth about his parents' death, the fact that his parents are wizards, as he is and has entered a whole new world.

Snape is confronted with his past when he first lays eyes on Harry, seeing and remembering everything that was good and right with his friendship with Lily (my interpretation). But he doesn't want to play favorites to a child who despises him on sight and is in another house from his own (Harry is in Gryyffindor, Snape is head of Slytherin). But how does that make him a bad person?

Well, okay, he DID make fun of and disabuse Harry at every opportunity, but he never purposely abuses him. He can't--because of Lily. Ah, yes, Lily. How he loved her and her friendship. She was nice and pretty and smart. And she was James'. He played off of his own jealousy of James and distanced himself from Lily because it was too painful. The only other person who truly knew this was Dumbledore. Then Harry discovers this and James' awful bullying of Snape during their Occlumency lessons.

Snape is a good guy, who was forced to play the villain by a man he most trusted. A man who used everyone, including Harry, as a pawn in his attempt to bring down the darkest wizard of all time, Voldemort, because he couldn't see his evil since his first meeting with Voldemort (then Tom Riddle) nor during his years at Hogwarts.

I love you, Professor Snape, and wish you hadn't gone.

  2. Uhm. No, I can't say I'm too fond of him, sorry. The whole in-love-with-Lily thing was a little creepy for me. Even though, when he was dying, telling Harry to look at him so he could see Lily's eyes for the last time - that was so romantic *big, big sigh*.

  3. You know the moment i saw his caring side, how much he loved Lilly but how it wasnt going to work out, i felt that was a turning point for me, i got him then and it was a big insight into his POV, i felt sorry for him, we are so busy throughout the series rooting for Harry and hating the bad guy that we don't think outside the box, the way James treated him was horible and i couldnt care less if he was Harry's dad he was still a prick :P POOR Snape :(

  4. Snape was severely misunderstood. In the end though I'm glad Harry was able to see where his allegiances lied, first and foremost with him & Dumbledore. In the end I'm sad he had to die he had so much more to live for but in my mind he's with Lily now. And sure, maybe it was weird that he loved Lily but he'd known her since childhood, James bullied him, I can't help but think that Lily made the wrong choice in choosing James but that's just my Snape-lover side talking, because if she hadn't married James they wouldn't have had Harry & the story as we know it wouldn't have happened. Still though Snape will forever remain 'the bravest man' Harry ever knew. ;---;
