Psychological horror and thrillers can be very, very good if the tension is done just right. Anything less than perfect, though, and the books can feel both fake and rambling. Best YA:

Films that rely on psychological elements are a bit more easy to pull off. Tension can come from the story itself, but it can also be carried by the soundtrack, lighting, or even just unspoken, hard to describe looks that can pass between characters.Cape Fear (1991)
