Lover Awakened by J.R. Ward

Lover Awakened by J.R. Ward
2006, Signet
Series: Book 3 of Black Dagger Brotherhood

Synopsis: A former blood slave, the vampire Zsadist still bears the scars from a past filled with suffering and humiliation. Renowned for his unquenchable fury and sinister deeds, he is a savage feared by humans and vampires alike. Anger is his only companion, and terror is his only passion—until he rescues a beautiful aristocrat from the evil Lessening Society.

Bella is instantly entranced by the seething power Zsadist possesses. But even as their desire for one another begins to overtake them both, Zsadist’s thirst for vengeance against Bella’s tormentors drives him to the brink of madness. Now, Bella must help her lover overcome the wounds of his tortured past, and find a future with her…

Why read: Loved the series so far.

What impressed me: I love Zsadist. His complete rawness makes him a powerful character. Bella manages to be convincing as both a strongly sexual woman and a caring, nurturing influence. Their romance is unconventional and sometimes extremely painful to read, but their need for one another both physically and emotionally makes for a hell of a love story.

What disappointed me: The Lessening Society irks me more and more with each book. Their methods seem largely ineffective. Instead of feeling like a scary foe the Brotherhood needs to be wary of, they seem like annoying little bugs that are mostly just aggravating.

Recommended: Absolutely.

Continue series: Most definitely.
