Spellcaster by Cara Lynn Shultz

Spellcaster by Cara Lynn Shultz
2012, Harlequin Teen
Series: Book 2 of Spellbound

Synopsis: Finding your eternal soulmate - easy.

Stopping a true-love-hungry evil - not so much…

After breaking a centuries-old romantic curse, Emma Connor is (almost) glad to get back to normal problems. Although...it's not easy dealing with the jealous cliques and gossip that rule her exclusive Upper East Side prep, even for a sixteen-year-old newbie witch. Having the most-wanted boy in school as her eternal soul mate sure helps ease the pain-especially since wealthy, rocker-hot Brendan Salinger is very good at staying irresistibly close....

But something dark and hungry is using Emma and Brendan's deepest fears to reveal damaging secrets and destroy their trust in each other. And Emma's crash course in über-spells may not be enough to keep them safe…or to stop an inhuman force bent on making their unsuspected power its own.

Why read: Requested from Netgalley

What impressed me: Spellcaster progresses nicely from Spellbound. The magic is shown more as Emma starts to control her powers. Emma's relationship with Brendan moves along at a good pace, not super fast even though they are soul mates and allowing for obstacles to be thrown in their way without hurting their relationship as a whole. The entire story was filled with mystery and danger, culminating in a satisfying battle.

What disappointed me: Girls throwing themselves at Brendan is so over the top it's getting a little old. I get that he's supposed to be handsome incarnate, but that doesn't quite excuse the girls behavior. Especially those who care about Emma. You'd hope at some point in the book at least one of the swooning girls would have a little self-respect and not throw herself at a guy who's already involved.

Recommended: Yes.

Continue series: Yes. I'm not sure where the story will go from here, but I'm in.
