Synopsis
Luc Cain was born and raised in Hell, but he isn’t feeling as demonic as usual lately—thanks to Frannie Cavanaugh and the unique power she never realized she had. But you can’t desert Hell without consequences, and suddenly Frannie and Luc find themselves targeted by the same demons who used to be Luc’s allies.
Left with few options, Frannie and Luc accept the protection of Heaven and one of its most powerful angels, Gabe. Unfortunately, Luc isn’t the only one affected by Frannie, and it isn’t long before Gabe realizes that being around her is too…tempting. Rather than risk losing his wings, he leaves Frannie and Luc under the protection of her recently-acquired guardian angel.
Which would be fine, but Gabe is barely out the door before an assortment of demons appears—and they’re not leaving without dragging Luc back to Hell with them. Hell won’t give up and Heaven won’t give in. Frannie’s guardian exercises all the power he has to keep them away, but the demons are willing to hurt anyone close to Frannie in order to get what they want. It will take everything she has and then some to stay out of Hell’s grasp.
And not everyone will get out of it alive.
Review
Original Sin weaves an insanely interesting back story with slightly predictable plot progression, resulting in a great book that doesn't quite reach the level of intensity Personal Demons achieved. My one complaint: not enough Gabe!
Original Sin is a very good follow up to Personal Demons. Lisa Desrochers did a wonderful job of maintaining the feel of the first book while keeping the story moving forward. I loved the way new information was incorporated seamlessly with the things we already know from the previous book. The highlight of the entire book for me was the big reveal about Frannie's family. Epic, yet totally fitting.
I found the actual plot specific to Original Sin to be predictable, but how other readers react to it will be based on how well versed they are in biblical history. I knew who and what Lili was well before the hinting began and guessed immediately what that was going to mean to both Matt and Luc. Luckily, this basic knowledge wasn't the only thing going on in Original Sin. Taylor's role in this book, start to finish, was completely unforeseen and I loved every scene with her.
Gabe went away for a while in Original Sin and it was sad for both Frannie and myself. I absolutely love him and that he would gladly give his wings up to be with Frannie. Sadly, the outlook for this event doesn't look so good. Frannie loves Luc. Or does she? It's getting a bit on my nerves that she doesn't seem to have a clear preference one way or another. She loves Luc, but when he's gone and Gabe's around - she loves and lusts after him. Both boys seem to give Frannie to one another, like an object rather than a person. There is a lot of - I must go, she's yours now - going on in Original Sin that would be more fitting for a dude gifting another dude his car while he's away at college rather than the girl he supposedly loves. Frannie doesn't seem to mind the passing back and forth, but why would she as she loves them both seemingly equally? Or maybe my real problem with the love triangle is that she's not with the guy I want her to be with. Because, Luc, yeah, I don't see the appeal.
Original Sin offers up some heart-wrenching scenes and is a fantastic addition to the overall series story line. It's not destined to become my favorite book in this series (as Personal Demons holds that title unless the next book is dripping with awesome) but it's a great read nonetheless.
