Review
Ok, wow. Just wow. I had read a few Lords of the Underworld short stories in various anthologies and liked them a lot and expected greatness from this series, but even my high expectations were easily surpassed by The Darkest Night.

The Lords introduced in this series starter were enthralling. I couldn't get enough of them, constantly hoping Showalter would give more information about each of them. Maddox, the main focus of The Darkest Night, holds Violence within him. While that should have made him less appealing, it only made his suffering seem more painful and his caring for Ashlyn all the more endearing.

Ashlyn was such an empathetic character that you couldn't hold her naivety against her. When she felt for someone, she felt with her entire person and did all she could do to help them, even at her own peril. Her having an ability of her own, and not being an ordinary human, helped a lot to make her interesting enough to seem like a good match for Maddox.

The Darkest Night was a very quick read for me, partially because the story was so engrossing, but also because the writing was excellent. The story flowed seamlessly, pulled me right in and held me captive as I turned the pages faster and faster towards the unexpected climax of the book. The Darkest Night is one of the very best first books in a series and I plan on devouring the rest in very quick succession. Absolutely wonderful.
