Please describe your daily hair, makeup and outfit selection routine.
My daily hair, makeup and outfit selection is as follows: Wake up with a vague feeling of having forgotten to do something important. Stumble toward shower. Step in cat vomit. Sigh. Wash off cat vomit in shower. Wash hair while singing Led Zeppelin medley reimagined as elevator muzak. (Personal fave? “Since I’ve Been Loving You” complete with “bah-bah-bah-bah” backing vocals.) Drip all over floor searching for towel. Put on glasses. Find towel. Eye mega-sized bottle of lotion. Say, “I really should moisturize.” Leave bottle untouched. Slap cream on face. Make sexy face in mirror. Say, “You are so dewy—you’re a dewy decimal system!” Realize this makes no sense. Carry on. Spritz industrial “texturizing lotion” in hair. Hair has one texture: stick straight. This does not prevent the purchase of everything with the word “texture” in it. Blow dry. Hair looks no different. Brush teeth. (Dental hygiene—so important.) Vaseline lips. Say, “ew.” Wipe most of it off lips. Ponder drawer full of makeup. Remember there was a time when I would give makeovers to all my friends. Remember that the people at Sephora consider me a high roller. Remember that, like a magpie, I am drawn to sparkly, shiny things, including eye shadows in every color of the rainbow. Remember that I am running late. Close drawer and count on the Vaseline to make me shine. Stare at open closet. Stare some more. Select jeans and a black concert t-shirt. Add socks and sneakers. Remember that there is a laptop, bagel, and coffee in my near future. Feel beautiful. Walk off singing “No Quarter” to a bossa nova beat.
If you were a pair of shoes, what kind would you be and why?
If I were a pair of shoes, I would be a pair of Converse. But a very sparkly pair, probably bright blue, with graffiti laces. I live in NYC, and I need to get around and up-and-down subway stairs quickly. So I’d be a pair of shoes that are street-smart, funky, sparkly, easy, comfy, can dress up or down, shoes that wouldn’t hurt your arches at the end of the day. That’s what people say about me so often: That Libba—she’s easy on the arches.

About the Book
The fifty contestants in the Miss Teen Dream Pageant thought this was going to be a fun trip to the beach, where they could parade in their state-appropriate costumes and complete in front of the cameras. But sadly, their airplane had another idea, crashing on a desert island and leaving the survivors stranded with little food, little water, and practically no eye liner.
What’s a beauty queen to do? Continue to practice for the talent portion of the program – or wrestle snakes to the ground? Get a perfect tan – or learn to run wild? And what should happen when the sexy pirates show up?
Welcome to the heart of non-exfoliated darkness. Your tour guide? None other than Libba Bray, the hilarious, sensational, Printz Award-winning author of A Great and Terrible Beauty and Going Bovine. The result is a novel that will make you laugh, make you think, and make you never see beauty the same way again.
