Interview with Ally Condie + Giveaway

Ally Condie, author of Matched, has been kind enough to stop by Reading with Tequila to answer some questions.

Ally Condie is a former high school English teacher who lives with her husband and three sons outside of Salt Lake City, Utah. She loves reading, running, eating, and listening to her husband play guitar.

Reading with Tequila: Matched is set in a fascinating society where every aspect of life is arranged by the government and the citizen appear to be content. One of the instigating factors in Cassia's beginning to exercise free will was a poem. Do you believe that just a few lines can cause a person to question everything they've always known?

Ally: I do, in the sense that often the written word can be a catalyst for feelings and questions that are already being felt and asked somewhere inside. Often, we find ourselves in reading the words of others. I chose the particular poem used in Matched because it is a poem that both incredibly beautiful and almost universally accessible—meaning that almost anyone of any age responds to those first few lines.

RWT: For me, the choice between Xander and Ky was like choosing between comfortable and forbidden. Have you heard from many fans about their Team Xander vs. Team Ky choices?

Ally: I have! I think right now it’s about 60-40 with Ky in the lead. It makes me happy that readers like both characters-I wanted them both to feel appealing and interesting.

RWT: The society plays an active role in the love triangle in Matched. Cassia seems to make a choice in the end, but was it really her choice or is it where the government led her all along?

Ally: This is a great question…and won’t be fully revealed until Book 3 so I can’t really answer it. I hope that’s all right. :) But I can say that Cassia made the choice to love Ky in the first book. Whether or not the government put that idea into her mind remains to be seen.

RWT: Matched is the beginning of a trilogy. Can you give us any hints as to what may be in the future for Cassia, Xander and Ky?

Ally: Yes! CROSSED, the sequel, is almost finished and we are going to see a lot of the Outer Provinces in that book. I’m very excited about the characters and the setting. It’s been so much fun to write.

About the Book

Cassia has always trusted the Society to make the right choices for her: what to read, what to watch, what to believe. So when Xander's face appears on-screen at her Matching ceremony, Cassia knows with complete certainty that he is her ideal mate . . . until she sees Ky Markham's face flash for an instant before the screen fades to black.

The Society tells her it's a glitch, a rare malfunction, and that she should focus on the happy life she's destined to lead with Xander. But Cassia can't stop thinking about Ky, and as they slowly fall in love, Cassia begins to doubt the Society's infallibility and is faced with an impossible choice: between Xander and Ky, between the only life she's known and a path that no one else has dared to follow.
