Fables, Vol. 1: Legends in Exile by Bill Willingham

Legends in Exile by
2002, Vertigo
Series: Book 1 of Fables

Synopsis: When a savage creature known only as the Adversary conquered the fabled lands of legends and fairy tales, all of the infamous inhabitants of folklore were forced into exile. Disguised among the normal citizens of modern-day New York, these magical characters have created their own peaceful and secret society within an exclusive luxury apartment building called Fabletown. But when Snow White's party-girl sister, Rose Red, is apparently murdered, it is up to Fabletown's sheriff, a reformed and pardoned Big Bad Wolf (Bigby Wolf), to determine if the killer is Bluebeard, Rose's ex-lover and notorious wife killer, or Jack, her current live-in boyfriend and former beanstalk-climber.

Why read: Popped up as an Amazon recommendation and looked interesting

What impressed me: I read the synopsis and thought this had possibility. I wasn't prepared for how really good it would be. We all know fairy tales of our childhoods of Disney overload. This is amped up fairy tales for adults. The same characters we all know, but in a whole new way. What happens once the happily-ever-after has past and real life sets in. A murder mystery with more edge than you'd even expect from the likes of Snow White or Jack Sprat.

What disappointed me: Nothing. This really surprised me.

Recommended: Absolutely. It's completely unexpected and familiar all at once.

Continue series: Most definitely.
