I suck at making entertainment decisions. I'll stare at my Netflix Instant list and can never make up my mind.
I needed a random feature. Netflix is currently beta testing a random episode feature, but I didn't want that. Watching TV episodes out of order is just lunacy. I needed a feature that would let chose the movie or TV show for me.
And now, if you have Chrome or Opera you can have just that.
Download Netflix Enhancer (Opera / Chrome).
Then go to "My List" on Netflix. Set the list to "Netflix Suggests."
Under "My List (108) A new link pops up. Click "Play Random from List."
A random suggestion appears. Not in the mood for it, just click again.
The best part: No autoplay. You decide if you like the suggestion before the movie/show starts. I am overwhelmingly pleased.

Summer TV: What I'll Be Watching
I have no idea how people survived back when new TV was a fall and spring only affair. Did they actually go outside and socialize? Perish the thought. Read? Binge on movies? I vaguely remember having a life. Somewhere back in the late 90s, pre-kids and pre-DVR. As long as they keep pumping out quality TV all year long, I will never have to return to those dark ages.
True Blood - June 16 - Finally. Anna Paquin's (Sookie) pregnancy forced production from 12 episodes to just 10 this season and I am not pleased. But I'll take less True Blood, rather than no True Blood at all. This is the one summer show I make an effort to live tweet each week.
Under the Dome - June 24 - I'm super excited for this. I watch everything Stephen King and am rarely disappointed. The book has been on my TBR since before it was released, but I just haven't found the time for the 1000+ pages. Regardless, the premise is awesome and I can't wait.
Dexter - June 30 - The last season. I'd be more excited for this if I wasn't still playing catch up. I started watching Dexter late, probably around season 4, so I'm still finishing up last season. I'll be caught up by the time this airs and the final season will be the first I get to watch live.
Camp - July 10 - I'm not 100% sold on this but I love everything to do with summer camp (former counselor, here) and this this definitely has potential.
What are you planning on watching this summer?

Piracy Revisited
A little over 3 years ago, I wrote a post about piracy, specifically as it relates to the publishing industry. It's safe to say things have changed. The view of piracy, in general, has shifted. No longer are pirates blank faced strangers. You know at least one personally. I guarantee it.
Back in the early 2000s, the internet discovered Napster and we thought it was awesome. I wasn't really even into music, but the availability of anything I wanted to check out, for free, right there for the taking was definitely an interesting look for the future.
Then people started realizing it was illegal. It was stealing. It was a hard concept for many to understand. How do you steal something that has no physical form? We all taped our favorite songs from the radio. Was that stealing too? Because I was pretty sure that was allowed.
Most of us, jail-fearing, generally law-abiding folks didn't question the situation much. It was illegal, so therefore there was no way in hell we were gonna keep downloading things and risk being put into jails with killers and rapists and whatnot. And things stayed that way for many, many years.
In 2010, I was hearing a lot about ebook piracy and decided to do my own little investigation to see if this was a real issue or if people were just freaking out for the drama of it. Honestly, I found it to be a non-issue.
Yes, there were ebook pirates. But this wasn't Napster music stealing stuff. Few people were actually doing it. A small percentage of books were available, anyway. And you really had to know someone to get involved in that. My general feeling was that not returning library books was a more prevalent crime in the book world than piracy.
And I considered it no longer.
Until, I started noticing the sheer number of people I personally know on Facebook and in person talking about all the movies they're pirated. Stuff that's still in the theaters. People without cable, just an internet connection - because pirating last night's TV shows just made more sense. It was somewhat shocking to see these otherwise law-abiding citizens not giving a damn that they're bragging about the crimes they're committing.
My first thought - what about the book world? My people, readers they are not. So I went back out Googling and, yeah, things have changed.
You can now download any book, within days of its release, without having to "know someone."
For an author to keep their books from being available for free download, they have to be super vigilant. Contacting torrent sites and demanding the files be taken down. Every single time one is uploaded.
And that isn't enough to keep they from being available. Sure you can search out your work by name, but most new releases and best sellers are bundled together on these sites. A hundred new books or more available in a single download. Most times without the title or author being searchable. Making it next to impossible for authors to keep these files from being available.
Movies, TV and music is still more widespread and publicly discussed, but books are definitely in the game now and I find that very sad.
Authors don't make the kind of money actors, directors, and musicians make. Their percentage from sales isn't great to begin with. Factor in the time and energy it would take to stalk torrent sites to protect their published works, and you've now cost them even more. They could have been writing. Touring. Taking a well-deserved day off with their families.
Right now, the only thing the publishing world has going for them that all other forms of entertainment currently lack, is the stigma. You could be a hardcore TV, movie or music fan, pirate everything available and society would pretty much give you a high-five. Not so with the book world.
Book people know the precarious situation publishing is in. How bad sales could spell the end of a promising career. How it could end a beloved series. And we don't put up with that nonsense. You won't find book lovers good gaming each other over a book they illegally downloaded. Because at least that is still looked down upon.
The big internet providers have been cracking down on high level downloaders. Throttling their service and occasionally banning them entirely. It's a step in the right direction, but it isn't perfect. Who's to say all that data wasn't legally downloaded? Or streamed via Netflix and the like? It's like a built in get out of jail free card.
Further, when you look at the numbers, pirated ebooks are teeny tiny files compared to movies and TV. Are they really raising red flags with the internet providers? I'd imagine not.
I'm scared for authors and publishers. I truly am.

Does Having a Book Series Made Into a TV Show Effect an Author's Work?
Or perhaps the better question is, should a TV series be produced when it's based on a book series that hasn't yet ended?
I got to thinking, after reviewing Charlaine Harris's Deadlocked, that the books have gone noticeably downhill since the True Blood debuted. Coincidence? Maybe, but it's well known that Harris watches the show and I feel it has effected her work. I'm not saying it's her fault. How difficult it must be to keep your versions of the characters firmly as you've always written them when you see them taking decidedly different roads every week.
Take Tara, for instance. In the books, she's married with twins, but on True Blood, she's a baby vamp. Seeing her in that light, I know I would want to maybe give her a little more edge in the books, knowing her character could own it. And I can totally see how that could happen subconsciously when sitting down to write the next book after watching an episode. I use Tara as an extreme example being that the versions of her character have differed wildly from the start.
On the other hand, I have never noticed Robert Kirkman be even slightly influenced by The Walking Dead show. Is that because he was always working in a visual medium, as the story began as comic books? Or maybe because his world had evolved so many times over so many issues, that he's too far ahead in the story for the TV show to be relevant to his current work? Or, most likely, by the time the show has gotten around to focusing on a Kirkman created character, he or she has already been long dead in the comic books.
TV shows based on books have to expand the worlds they are based on in order to provide enough material to work with in the long-term. I have yet to see a TV show that can work without creating at least a few show-based characters and changing the plot up at least a little bit. It's understandable, and usually works. What would The Walking Dead be without Daryl Dixon? But it doesn't always work. I was prepared to love The Secret Circle, but so many characters were missing that I couldn't get into it.
Having your book series made into a TV show must be an exciting thing for an author. It benefits the author on many levels, not only monetarily, but also it brings in new readers to both that series and any others the author has written or may write in the future. It's an instant fan base boost.I also think it sets the author up to walk a hard line. An unforgiving one. Because long-time hardcore fans do not like their books series messed with by anyone - especially the author.
Am I crazy here? Have you noticed a series decline after it's been produced as a TV show? Or can you think of a series that has gotten better, maybe even revitalized, by its new show fanbase?

I chose to believe that Daryl just couldn't be contained by the page
